What Happened to Amy Winehouse? Recounting the Final Days

After delivering such hit songs a Rehab, Love Is a Losing Game and Back to Black, it was clear that Amy Winehouse was destined to become an icon in the music industry. Anyone who followed Amy and her music career was well aware that her soulful lyrics and general sense of pathos extended deeply into her personal life.

Amy struggled with alcoholism, drugs and mental health issues and was no stranger to difficult relationships. The entertainer died at the tender age of 27. She was found dead in her apartment on July 23, 2011 after an apparent drug and alcohol overdose. Initial speculations suggested alcohol poisoning and substance abuse, but the cause was disputed by some.

Circumstances of Amy Winehouse’s death

Amy’s troubles with addiction began in 2008 when she entered a vicious cycle of substance abuse, abstinence and relapse. During the next three years, the severity of the abuse escalated significantly.

During the last few months of her life, her former bodyguard said that she had been going through a period of heavy intoxication. He added that the last few days of her life were spent drinking, watching TV, browsing YouTube videos, listening to music and was generally in a jovial mood.

On the last day of her life, Amy was said to be awake till about 2:00 am. At about 10 am, her bodyguard checked on her and found her lying in bed. However, this did not raise any suspicion, as  she was known to sleep well into the day.

At around 3:00 pm, he went to her room and tried to wake her again. He noticed that she had not moved since he last checked on her. He immediately checked her vital signs and determined that she was not breathing and she did not have a pulse. He immediately called emergency services. The ambulance arrived an hour later and Amy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Coroner’s Reports and Findings

As part of the investigation, police officers and forensic experts searched the home and found several bottles of vodka in her bedroom.

The initial inquest from the coroner determined that Amy Winehouse died of alcohol intoxication as her blood alcohol count was shown to be well over five times the legal driving limit. Such high concentrations of blood alcohol can be fatal. For well over one year, the coroner’s determination of the cause of death remained that of alcohol intoxication.

In December 2012, the death investigation of Amy Winehouse was reopened due to claims of a conspiracy. A complete forensic analysis was relaunched. After a thorough study, it was reconfirmed that Winehouse died of accidental alcohol poisoning due to a high level of blood alcohol.

She was cremated on July 26, 2011 where many of her family, friends and associates attended the somber funeral. Winehouse also joined the infamous 27 Club that includes other celebrities who died at the age of 27. Considered a legend, Amy joins the ranks of Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix.
