What are TASERS and stun guns?

TASERS and stun guns are handheld electroshock guns developed by TASER International. Most people are surprised to learn that TASER is an acronym for “Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle.” The TASER gun was originally designed in 1969 by an inventor named Jack Cover, who named the electric gun after the adventure character Tom Swift.

How do Stun Guns Work?

TASER® guns work by firing tiny dart-like electrodes propelled by small gas charges (such as compressed nitrogen). The electrodes have metal wires that attach back to the device. When the electrodes contact the target, the electronic device transmits powerful electrical pulses along the cables and into the target’s body, causing significant pain.

The typical device’s maximum range is about 30 feet. The guns use a pulse arc of electricity that disrupts a person’s nerve and muscle function without needing metal prongs on the projectile to penetrate the skin.

The pulse models are designed to bring down a subject even if they wear body armor.

Who Uses the Devices?

TASER guns are used primarily by police departments and law enforcement officers to reduce the number of lethal firearm-related deaths. Many police departments report a decline in the number of police officer-involved shootings as a result of using police TASER guns.

Private security guards also use electronic stun guns as an alternative to carrying a firearm. Private citizens also use the devices as personal protection to stop attackers in their tracks.

Controversy over Safety

There is growing controversy about the use or abuse of electronic guns, especially concerning the use of police tasers.  While they are not technically considered lethal weapons, many question the safety and humaneness of the tools. Many people feel the use of police taser guns is abused. Several civil liberty groups would like to see them banned completely. Amnesty International has documented over 150 deaths related to the use of electric guns.

The U.S. National Institute of Justice studied taser-related abuse deaths while a subject was in custody.

Also, it has a built-in laser to help improve aiming.
  • Cell Phone Stun Gun – This is one of the most powerful stun guns and is simple and reliable. Disguised as a cell phone, the stun gun cell is one of the most powerful stun guns available. People usually think it is the high voltage that stops an attacker. Not true. Voltage doesn’t hurt anyone; it’s the amperage. One amp will kill someone. This cell only has between 5 and 8 milliamps. Just enough to incapacitate an attacker without doing any permanent damage. This is an entirely non-lethal way to protect yourself. 800,000 Volts, 4.5 inches tall X, 1.75 inches wide, 1 inch thick, Available in Red or Blue, FREE Holster Safety Switch.
