Overview of the mSpy Software and App for Tracking Mobile Devices

mSpy is considered to be the most popular cell phone tracking application. The broad range of features and affordable prices make it one of the leading smartphone parental control apps. The software is available for monitoring both phones and computers. This is helpful if you want to monitor a child, teen, or employee on their phone or computer.

This article provides an overview of mSpy’s features and benefits, how much it costs, and where to find more information about the solution. Please note that I’m providing this review for your information only, but I do not recommend purchasing or using this software. This company operates in a grey area that could land you in more trouble than it is worth. You will see plenty of slick advertisements and recommendations online, but a good company does not back the claims.

Use mSpy to View Call Logs

mSpy allows you to view a chronological list of incoming and outgoing calls. In addition, you can see the call duration and timestamps for each call. This can help you protect your child by blocking specific numbers from reaching your child. This feature is beneficial if you’re concerned about your child communicating with the wrong people.

mSpy Allows You To Monitor Text Messages

With mSpy, you can remotely monitor all incoming and outgoing text messages. This is probably one of the most beneficial features, as many children spend more time texting on their mobile phones than anything else. Knowing who your child is texting with and what they say is critical as a parent. This feature even allows you to view deleted text messages. Plus, you can monitor photos, and videos received (on Android only).

Read Social Media Messaging Apps

Also, if your child uses specialized messaging apps for social media, you can track that too. mSpy allows you to capture messages sent and received on many popular apps. For example, capture messages on Facebook Messenger, iMessage, Kik, Line, Telegram, Tinder, Skype, and WhatsApp.

Track the Current GPS Location of a Phone

The GPS phone tracking feature lets you track a mobile phone’s location on a map. You can even view the route history over a specific period. Additionally, the tracking application comes with an impressive Geofencing feature. This feature allows you to set safe geographic boundaries for your children. You can set up alerts and know whenever your child enters or exits the safe zone.

Control Apps and Programs

mSpy lets you view all apps installed on your child’s cell phone or tablet. You can block apps you don’t want your child to use via your control panel.

Record and Log Keystrokes

This critical feature records every keystroke on your child’s mobile device keyboard or keypad. You’ll know exactly what is happening by recording all the words typed. This feature can help prevent exposure to dangerous people, bullies, and more.

Keep Track of Photos and Videos

In 2014, according to Mary Meeker’s annual Internet Trends report, people uploaded an average of 1.8 billion digital images daily. And that number doesn’t include the number of videos posted online or the number exchanged from user to user. Posting and exchanging photos is one of the most common uses for today’s smartphones. Unfortunately, this allows criminals, thieves, and predators to interact with your child or teen. mSpy uploads a copy of every photo and video to your mSpy account.

Feedback and Ratings

The distributor boasts a 95% customer satisfaction rating. However, the company is not BBB Accredited, and it had more than 65 formal complaints in the past three years, with 24 complaints during the past 12 months.

Many complaints and negative reviews say that the software didn’t work, their support team wouldn’t help me, and the company refused to refund me. It seems like the company is willing to give refunds only after you file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.

mSpy Affiliate Program

If you are a website publisher, blogger, email marketer, or social media influencer, you may have heard of the mSpy Affiliate Program. Based on my experience, it is one of the most poorly managed affiliate programs I’ve ever encountered. Their registration process is sketchy, slow communications, and payouts are subjective. In addition, they don’t provide much support in terms of marketing, no banners, and no recommended ad copy.

Free Version

Beware of any free versions floating around out there. The only way to purchase a 100% functional copy of the software or app is to buy it directly through the vendor. Free versions do exist and are available for download. However, the version available for download may not be the latest and may not be completely functional.

mspy-cell-phone-trackingWe do not recommend purchasing or using this software. Consumer complaints about this product and the company suggest that the product doesn't always work, their support is poor and it is difficult to get a refund. If you've been scammed, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, dispute the charge with your bank or credit card company, and leave negative reviews with as many review sites as possible.

  1. I am a licensed/insured Private Investigator in California. I have a client who is receiving threatening and extremely vile sexual texts from a phone that appears to be a “Burner Phone”. I have reached out to our statewide Listserv members to see if there is a way to find out who is doing this. All responses indicate this is an extremely difficult (at best) task. Do you know of any method that can be used? Of course this must be legal (no offense) to do.

    • If the texts are, in fact, coming from a burner phone, it is highly unlikely that you’ll be able to find out who is sending the messages. The burner phones can be purchased inexpensively with cash, so there is no connection between the phone and its user. And since they are disposable, the phone that was used to send the messages may already be in the trash. There are also “burner apps” that can be used to create virtual numbers to send text messages/make calls anonymously. However, those are usually installed on the sender’s phone and therefore use cellular networks, which would be tracked by the carrier.

Are the text messages the only form of harassment your client is receiving? If it proves too difficult to track who is sending the text messages, maybe they can be tracked via the other methods of harassment, such as social media posts, online forum discussions, phone calls, group affiliations, etc.
