Learn about the best online coupon websites

Everyone loves getting a deal. Doing a little bit of research upfront allows us to get the products and services we love for less money. This article provides an overview of online coupons and includes a list of online coupon websites. Use this helpful list as a starting point when searching for discount codes for anything you purchase, online or offline.

What is a Coupon?

In marketing, a coupon is a ticket, document, or code that is exchanged for a financial discount or rebate when purchasing a product. Manufacturers and retailers issue documents such as advertisements, vouchers, certificates, cards, redemption slips, and tokens. They can be issued in electronic or physical form.

In addition to financial discounts, many retailers offer redeemable vouchers for free products, free or discounted shipping, free memberships, and many other reasons.

The purpose of a coupon is to get a person to take some buying action, either to purchase a product, register their name and address, visit a store, etc.

Online coupons are explicitly designed for purchasing goods or services on the internet. They are usually not redeemable in stores, but some retailers offer the option of redeeming them in stores.  These are typically referred to as “printable” versions.

Retailers also offer redeemable codes to encourage customers to use the internet for purchases because the internet is typically a lower-cost delivery channel for a retailer (meaning it costs less for them to sell you a product or service online than it does in a retail store).

Coupon Redemption

To redeem a coupon or voucher at a retail store, you usually must print the actual document or voucher and bring it to the retailer for verification. It is usually only necessary to enter the promotion code in the appropriate box during checkout for online purchases. Sometimes, a particular promotion code or keyword can be mentioned when placing a telephone call to a retailer.

Some of the websites on our list of online coupon websites have the code embedded within the link to the retailer, so you don’t have to type a redemption code during checkout. If you see advertisements for vouchers of this nature, be sure to check that you received the appropriate discount during checkout.

Validity and Expiration

It is important to note that not all advertisements or special codes will be valid. Retailers usually offer discounts for a limited time or related to a specific promotion. Some of the websites on our list of online coupon websites include feedback from users regarding the validity of particular codes.

This is a helpful feature because it gives you some idea of the likelihood that it will be valid. Remember to check the expiration date if you print a physical ticket copy.

List of the Best Online Coupon Websites

Many database websites provide discounts and savings that can be printed and redeemed in person at a retail store. Also, the companies on this list of online coupon websites often provide promotional codes that can be used when purchasing items online.

Many of the best websites allow you to search by category or a specific retail store. Following are my favorites:

  • Coupons.com – Provides free printable advertisements, grocery discount vouchers, recipes, and internet certificates for thousands of products.
  • Coupon Mom  – Cut your grocery bill in half with grocery deals by state, drugstore deals, restaurant discounts, and more.
  • Groupon – Groupon features a daily deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy. Groupon came on the scene as the “next big thing”, especially regarding daily deals, but has declined somewhat with new entrants into the daily deals space. Groupon faces tough competition from LivingSocial (see below) and, more recently, from the online retail giant, Amazon.com. Based on my experience, Groupon is best for experiences rather than products.
  • LivingSocial – LivingSocial offers the best daily deals on handpicked experiences that can be shared with friends.
  • Lozo – Easy-to-use website with over $500 in grocery advertisements. Browse the site and print the certificates you need, or fill out your grocery list and let the discounts come to you. I use this site personally because it is easy to browse and print the things I need. However, there is one frustrating thing about this particular site. They aggregate deals from multiple sites. So, when it comes time to print out everything you clipped, you must go to all the different sites to print.
  • MyCoupons.com – One of the oldest couponing sites on the internet. Excellent site for coupon codes, printable grocery vouchers, and discount shopping.
  • Proctor & Gamble (P&G) – Proctor & Gamble’s online store offers discounts and certificates for products you order daily. Find sizable discounts on such brands as Olay, Gillette, Crest, Pampers, Duracell, and Tide. Many of these same ads are distributed directly to mailboxes around the country. I use at least one of these every week when I go shopping.
  • RetailMeNot – Find codes and discounts for online stores, discount codes, vouchers, and promo codes for great discounts at thousands of online stores. Also, RetailMeNot distributes a printed, physical flyer to mailboxes in some areas.
  • Ultimate Coupons – This couponing website helps online shoppers save money using free coupons and codes, sales and special deals, comparison shopping, and other methods. One thing that sets them apart from other sites is that their employees hand-test the voucher to ensure they work. There is nothing more frustrating than an ad that doesn’t work.
  • Valpak.com – You may recognize ValPak from the marketing mailers you receive in your mailbox each week. Valpak.com is one of the largest websites with money-saving deals you can print for free.

Discontinued Sites

  • Coupon Cabin – In the past, this site offered a large selection of test and guaranteed vouchers to help you get discounts on the products you’re looking for. Cabin was previously recognized and recommended by the media as a quality site by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Good Morning America, and even Oprah.

  1. Is it safe to use coupons nowadays. I have heard many things about coupon websites and let me tell you these things does not paint a very beautiful picture of coupons websites in my mind. I have heard that they take away your personal information from your computer using some sort of scripts. Is is safe to keep using them? what’s your take?
