FBI Asks the Public to Help Identify ISIS Terrorists Seen in Videos
The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is taking a unique step in fighting the war on terrorism. The bureau is asking for the public to help identify an ISIS militant with a North American accent, who was recently seen in an ISIS propaganda video. The man, known as Jihadi John, in the video is wearing a mask that covers the majority of his face, but some of his facial features are visible. His eyes, eyebrows and the surrounding area are clearly visible, and in some camera angles, the outlines of the man’s face can be seen.
Although there have been no official releases on the Fed’s tactics, the FBI is undoubtedly leveraging advanced voice analysis software and comparing the digital signatures to previously recorded telephone conversations. In addition, the Feds are likely using digital artists to infer composite photographs of the man’s face.
In addition, they are likely running facial recognition software to compare the images to millions of photographs in various intelligence databases. Specialists and analysts are also scouring the footage to identify potentially identifiable geographic locations showing in the footage.
Identifying Potential ISIS Recruits
In addition, the Feds are asking for help identifying anyone traveling abroad to join terrorist groups. Currently, they are tracking more than 10 individuals who are known to have joined ISIL to fight in Syria.
In the past several months, the terrorist group has released graphic videos that show journalists from America, Britain, and France being beheaded. The person speaking in those propaganda videos had a British accent. The FBI reportedly knows the identity of that individual but has not yet release the information to the media.
The Bureau is interested in knowing about anyone who may have traveled abroad, or may be planning to travel.
ISIL is becoming more aggressive and create with their recruiting tactics, using online recruitment methods, propaganda images, videos and footage, and featuring English-speaking men in their videos to target a wider audience. If the terrorist organization is successful at recruiting Americans, it would present a much greater challenge to American security forces. In addition, it would increase the likelihood that acts of terrorism could be carried out within our borders.
