This article provides a review of BeenVerified, the public records research service. In this review, I’ll provide a high-level overview of the company, their public records search services, discuss how much it costs, and how to access it. Plus, I’ll answer a few frequently asked questions. This review of BeenVerified includes the web-based version as well as the mobile app.

What is BeenVerified?

BeenVerified is a public records search engine that can be used to find information about people. The company has been around for more than 10 years and more than 1 million people have tried the service.

BeenVerified was founded in 2007 by Joshua Levy and Ross Cohen in New York City. Currently, Joshua Levy is the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Ross Cohen is the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

The company has more than 50 employees and more than 100,000 subscribers. Since its inception, more than 1 million people have used the service. According to SimilarWeb, their website is one of the top 400 most visited sites on the internet.

BeenVerified has a simple and sensible mission, “to help people discover, understand and use public data in their every day lives.” Digging through public records can be a daunting task and most people don’t even know where to start. BeenVerified’s goal is to make public records accessible to everyday individuals. Based on my analysis of their company and its products and services, I think they accomplish this goal.

I’ve been using the internet since 1994, and I’ve always thought that accessing public records was more difficult than it should be. If you take away only one thing from this article, it should be that BeenVerified makes finding public records easy.

Reasons to Use BeenVerified

Before I describe the features and benefits, let me suggest a few reasons why you might need to use the service. There are a number of good reasons:

  • Use it to track down old friends, long lost loves and even family members. If you’re planning a family or class reunion, having full access to a public records search engine makes the process fast and easy. It can significantly reduce the amount of time you’ll have to spend searching.
  • Use it to identify unknown callers. I get at least five or six calls per day from numbers that I don’t recognize. With BeenVerfiied’s reverse phone number look up tool, I can easily enter the number and find out who owns it. In addition, I can see feedback from other users who may have searched for the same number.
  • Find out if someone is telling the truth about their past. I used the service to check out someone’s past and learned they weren’t telling the truth about where they lived or their finances.
  • Check out your own background. If you’re looking for a job, it is a good idea to know what a potential employer might find out about you beforehand. It is better to know and be prepared for any questions.
  • Save Time – Technically, you could find all of the information on your own, but it would take you a long time. BeenVerified aggregates public records information from multiple sources and makes it available to you in one place, saving you a lot of time.
  • It’s Affordable – The company offers membership plans that offer unlimited searches for less than $30 a month. These prices are comparable to its competitors.
  • Privacy – The company is committed to maintaining the privacy of their users. Your search history will never be shared with anyone and the subjects you search for will not be notified.

BeenVerified Mobile App

In addition accessing the site through a web browser, you can download the BeenVerified Mobile App directly to your cell phone for a better mobile experience.

The BeenVerified Mobile App
The BeenVerified Mobile App

All of the services described here are available via the BeenVerified Mobile App as well. For purposes of this review, I downloaded the app via the Google Play Store, but you can also download it from Apple iTunes.

The app is well-designed, is easy to use and looks great.

Having access via a mobile device is super handy in case you need to refer to information while you’re on the go. This allows you to quickly login and easily pull out your cell phone and look up people that you just met.

Also, you can easily lookup phone numbers that you don’t recognize.

When I downloaded the app to my mobile phone, the BeenVerified App had over 1 million downloads with a rating of 3.4 out of 5, based on nearly 10,000 reviews.

List of BeenVerified’s Features

Before I signed up for the service, I wondered, “What will I have access to?”, “What will it show on the screen?”. If you’re wondering the same thing, here is an overview of the primary features along with a few screenshots.

Member Dashboard

When I first logged in to my member dashboard, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that BeenVerified is a legit people search service. I was very impressed with their dashboard, the ease of use and the overall look and feel of the site. Compared to other people search engines that compete in this space, BeenVerified is the has the best usability.

When you sign up, you can run unlimited searches, including: background reports, contact info, phone search, email lookup, address search and criminal records, and more. However, it is very important that you understand the information you obtain from this service cannot be used in employment decisions, for credit screening, or in making tenancy decisions or any other purposes restricted by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).

People Search

Their most popular feature is the People Search. The People Search scans billions of public records to find data and information.

To search for a person, just click on the People Search tab and enter the First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name, City, State and Age. You can some of the information blank, but the more specific you can be, the better your results. For example, if you don’t know the city and state, leave it blank.

The system will use the information you enter to search and return a list of potential matches.  Once you select a name, the system will compile a huge amount of information from a variety of different public records resources and returns information such as:

Address History and Real Property Information – The Address History results plot all of the addresses on a U.S. map. In addition, the results show the individual address plotted on a local map. The results indicate approximate dates where the individual lived at the location.

You can dig down deeper into each address and get information such as: the county where the property is located, the dwelling’s square footage, year it was built, tract number, subdivision name, approximate market value, active loans, number of bedrooms and bathrooms. In addition, you can view a list o registered sex offenders and photos.

Aliases (other names) – This section shows other names the individual may go by. In the tests I ran, this section was of limited value. It usually includes variations such as, “First Name, Last Name”, “Nickname, Last Name”, “First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name”, etc.

Associated persons – The search results provide information on any associated people, such as a spouse, children, parents and others. This is an extremely helpful feature because you can drill down into the details for family members to get a better picture of the person’s household. You may find what you’re looking for under a family member, rather than in your subject’s online profile.

The associated persons section will also suggest the names of neighbors associated with each address found. This can be helpful if you need to track down a missing person. Neighbors may know their whereabouts, or have other helpful information.

Bankruptcies – The Bankruptcy section will provide details of any bankruptcies filed by the individual. It provides the debtor identities, date filed, the type (Chapter 7 or 13), appointed trustee, attorneys and the disposition date. Learn more about Bankruptcy.

Education History – The system searches for publicly available information on the subject’s educational history. Information will only show up in this area if the person disclosed or posted their information. If nothing shows up in this area, it doesn’t necessarily mean the person doesn’t have any degrees or diplomas. It just means they aren’t available in public records databases.

Personal Details (Overview) – Information the Personal Details section include the person’s name, age, date of birth, marital status.

Professional Background – The system will search for any publicly available sources for positions the individual held. You can pay an additional fee to access additional professional background resources.

Then, the system presents the information in a logically arranged and easy to use page of information. The amount of data and information it provides is actually quite impressive.

If you need to find a missing person, track down an old friend or long lost love, BeenVerified helps you quickly gather a huge amount of public records information to help you locate the person.

Depending on what records are available for your particular search, the page could be very long. So, you can use the left navigation menu to navigate through the results (sample to the right).

Court Runner Service

In some cases, public records have not been “digitized”, which means they can’t be found online because they aren’t in electronic format. In these situations, you can pay a small fee for their Court Runner service. With the Court Runner service, a person will physically visit the court houses in the counties where your subjects reside or lived in the past. The Court Runner visits in person, conducts a search and, if available, will retrieve the records for you. Pretty cool.

Reverse Phone Number Search

The Reverse Phone Number Search feature allows you to search landline and cell phone numbers to match the number to a person. I get a TON of spam phone calls from telemarketers, so this is a feature I could use all of the time.

The system provides information on the possible owner of the phone number and their address, the line type (landline or cell phone), the mobile service provider, and the locale (based on the area code).

BeenVerified even checks the phone number to see if there are any complaints associated with the phone number.

To use the feature, click on the Phone Search tab at the top of the screen and enter the phone number and click on the Search button. The system will search and return a list of possible matches.

BeenVerified Reverse Phone Number Search

Once the results are displayed on screen, the most likely match is shown first. In addition, other possible matches are displayed at the top of the screen to help you easily navigate back and forth.

Click the button below to get started with a Reverse Phone Number Search.

Comments from Other Users About a Phone Number

BeenVerfied also has a new feature that allows users to provide feedback about certain phone numbers. For example, if you sign up and use the service to check a phone call that you received from a telemarketer, you can add that feedback directly on the results page. In addition to adding comments, you can indicate if the call was from a telemarketer or if you received a text from the number.

The information you enter will help other people who search for the same number to see your feedback.

Alerts and Notifications

A nice feature they just added is that you can set an alert to be notified if any of your reports change. This is a handy feature that allows you to avoid running another search to see if new information is available.

Please note that prices may change, so visit the website for the most recent cost to access the system. Make sure you understand the cost before you checkout.

I am not aware of any free trials offered by the company. And, I haven’t seen any free logins. At the time I signed up, a free trial was not available. Nor have I seen any coupon codes that actually work.

However, the company may run promotions from time to time. If I see any notices of coupon codes or free trials, I’ll update this article.

Notes about the Initial Signup Process

As a part of the signup process you have to acknowledge that you are at least 18 years of age. Also, you must agree that you understand that the information you obtain from the service cannot be used in determining someone’s eligibility for employment, tenant screening, or education admission.

There are seemingly a lot of steps in the sign up process. I feel this is both good and bad. It is bad, because I’m impatient and I want access to the report I’m trying to run. It is good, because the thorough signup process helps to lend a feel of legitimacy to the service.

The speed of delivering results is super fast once you sign up.

Is BeenVerified Legal?

Yes. BeenVerified is legal, legitimate, safe to use and is not a scam. If you do a Google search, you may see articles and posts that suggests that it is a scam. I feel those criticisms are completely unfounded. I signed up for the service on multiple, separate occasions. At no time did I feel the process was, unsafe, deceptive or trying to trick me in any way. I always understood what I was buying, how much it costs, how I could get support and how to cancel.

The services can be used to search public records, lookup information about people. However, it cannot be used for credit, tenant or employment screening.

Positive and Negative Reviews

If you do a Google search for BeenVerified reviews, you are likely to see a wide variety of results. The ratings vary from horrible to great. Why are people posting negative reviews? In my opinion, it has to do with expectations.

If you’re looking to do full background checks for new employees, dig deep into someone’s finances, then you will likely be disappointed with what you find. While the data and information you can compile on an individual via their service is impressive, BeenVerfiied is still pulling records from public sources.

Also, if you’re looking for a free background check service, you will definitely be disappointed. It costs the company money to purchase access to all of these public records and make it available to you. Naturally, they are going to pass those costs along to you. If you come across any advertising for a free background check, it is either a fraud, or you won’t get what you pay for. BeenVerfiied is a truly legitimate service that provides you with access to real records and real reports.

My advice to you is – have realistic expectations. If you understand that BeenVerified is an online public records search tool that pulls together information from a wide variety of sources in a short amount of time, you’ll be extremely happy with the service. I’m a total skeptic when it comes to sites like this, and I was actually impressed with the service.

How Many Records Can I Search?

BeenVerified searches through billions of public records that are aggregated from a variety of publicly available resources. And, it is designed in such a way as to not be overwhelming. The system suggests associated people, relatives, neighbors, etc. and allows you to dig down into their information quite easily.
