This article provides a detailed review of BeenVerified, the public records research service. In this review, we’ll provide a high-level overview of the company, their public records search services, discuss how much it costs, and how to access it. We’ll also answer a few frequently asked questions. This review includes the web-based version as well as the mobile app.
What is BeenVerified?
BeenVerified is a public records search engine that can be used to find information about people. The company has been around for more than 10 years and more than 1 million people have tried the service.
BeenVerified was founded in 2007 by Joshua Levy and Ross Cohen in New York City. Joshua Levy is the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Ross Cohen is the Chief Operating Officer (COO).
The company has more than 50 employees and more than 100,000 subscribers. Since its inception, more than 1 million people have used the service. According to SimilarWeb, their site is one of the top 400 most visited sites on the internet.
Something I like about BeenVerified is that they have a simple and sensible mission. The company’s stated mission is “to help people discover, understand and use public data in their every day lives.” Digging through public records can be a daunting task and most people don’t even know where to start. BeenVerified’s goal is to make public records accessible to everyday individuals.
I’ve been using the internet since 1994, and I’ve always thought that accessing public records was more difficult than it should be. If you take away only one thing from this article, it should be that BeenVerified makes finding public records easy.
How to Access BeenVerified
You can use any mobile device with a web browser to visit the site. This includes personal computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones. To access the system via a web browser, just click on the button below.
BeenVerified Mobile App
In addition accessing the site through a web browser, you can download the BeenVerified Mobile App directly to your cell phone for a better mobile experience.
All of the services described here are available via the BeenVerified Mobile App as well. For purposes of this review, I downloaded the app via the Google Play Store, but you can also download it from Apple iTunes.
The app is well-designed, is easy to use and looks great.
Having access via a mobile device is super handy in case you need to refer to information while you’re on the go. This allows you to quickly and easily pull out your cell phone and look up people that you just met.
Also, you can easily lookup phone numbers that you don’t recognize.
When I downloaded the app to my mobile phone, the BeenVerified App had over 1 million downloads with a rating of 3.4 out of 5, based on nearly 10,000 reviews.
List of BeenVerified’s Features
When I first logged in to my member dashboard, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that BeenVerified is a legit people search service. I was very impressed with their dashboard, the ease of use and the overall look and feel of the site. Compared to other people search engines that compete in this space, BeenVerified is the has the best usability.
When you sign up, you can run unlimited searches, including: background reports, contact info, phone search, email lookup, address search and criminal records, and more. However, it is very important that you understand the information you obtain from this service cannot be used in employment decisions, for credit screening, or in making tenancy decisions or any other purposes restricted by the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA).
Their most popular feature is the People Search. The People Search scans billions of public records to find data and information.
To search for a person, just click on the People Search tab and enter the First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name, City, State and Age. You can some of the information blank, but the more specific you can be, the better your results. For example, if you don’t know the city and state, leave it blank.
The system will use the information you enter to search and return a list of potential matches. Once you select a name, the system will compile a huge amount of information from a variety of different public records resources and returns information such as:
Address History and Real Property Information – The Address History results plot all of the addresses on a U.S. map. In addition, the results show the individual address plotted on a local map. The results indicate approximate dates where the individual lived at the location. You can dig down deeper into each address and get information such as: the county where the property is located, the dwelling’s square footage, year it was built, tract number, subdivision name, approximate market value, active loans, number of bedrooms and bathrooms. In addition, you can view a list o registered sex offenders and photos.
Aliases (other names) – This section shows other names the individual may go by. In the tests I ran, this section was of limited value. It usually includes variations such as, “First Name, Last Name”, “Nickname, Last Name”, “First Name, Middle Initial, Last Name”, etc.
Associated persons – The search results provide information on any associated people, such as a spouse, children, parents and others. This is an extremely helpful feature because you can drill down into the details for family members to get a better picture of the person’s household. You may find what you’re looking for under a family member, rather than in your subject’s online profile.
Bankruptcies – The Bankruptcy section will provide details of any bankruptcies filed by the individual. It provides the debtor identities, date filed, the type (Chapter 7 or 13), appointed trustee, attorneys and the disposition date. Learn more about Bankruptcy.
Education History – The system searches for publicly available information on the subject’s educational history. Information will only show up in this area if the person disclosed or posted their information. If nothing shows up in this area, it doesn’t necessarily mean the person doesn’t have any degrees or diplomas. It just means they aren’t available in public records databases.
Personal Details (Overview) – Information the Personal Details section include the person’s name, age, date of birth, marital status.
Professional Background – The system will search for any publicly available sources for positions the individual held. You can pay an additional fee to access additional professional background resources.
Then, the system presents the information in a logically arranged and easy to use page of information. The amount of data and information it provides is actually quite impressive.
If you need to find a missing person, track down an old friend or long lost love, BeenVerified helps you quickly gather a huge amount of public records information to help you locate the person.
Depending on what records are available for your particular search, the page could be very long. So, you can use the left navigation menu to navigate through the results (sample to the right).
Court Runner Service
In some cases, public records have not been “digitized”, which means they can’t be found online because they aren’t in electronic format. In these situations, you can pay a small fee for their Court Runner service. With the Court Runner service, a person will physically visit the court houses in the counties where your subjects reside or lived in the past. The Court Runner visits in person, conducts a search and, if available, will retrieve the records for you. Pretty cool.
Reverse Phone Number Search
The Reverse Phone Number Search feature allows you to search landline and cell phone numbers to match the number to a person. I get a TON of spam phone calls from telemarketers, so this is a feature I could use all of the time.
The system provides information on the possible owner of the phone number and their address, the line type (landline or cell phone), the mobile service provider, and the locale (based on the area code).
BeenVerified even checks the phone number to see if there are any complaints associated with the phone number.
To use the feature, click on the Phone Search tab at the top of the screen and enter the phone number and click on the Search button. The system will search and return a list of possible matches.
There are several categories that are specified as Premium Data. This means you can access the information by paying an additional fee. Categories of Premium Data include: Judgments and Liens, Licenses and Permits, Voter Registration, UCC Filings, Weapons Permits, Aircraft Registration, Business Affiliations, Sporting Permits, Pilot license and more.

Notes about the Initial Signup Process
As a part of the signup process you have to acknowledge that you are at least 18 years of age. Also, you must agree that you understand that the information you obtain from the service cannot be used in determining someone’s eligibility for employment, tenant screening, or education admission.
There are seemingly a lot of steps in the sign up process. I feel this is both good and bad. It is bad, because I’m impatient and I want access to the report I’m trying to run. It is good, because the thorough signup process helps to lend a feel of legitimacy to the service.
The speed of delivering results is super fast once you sign up.

What About the Negative Reviews?
If you do a Google search for BeenVerified reviews, you are likely to see a wide variety of results. The ratings vary from horrible to great. Why are people posting negative reviews? In my opinion, it has to do with expectations. If you’re looking to do full background checks for new employees, dig deep into someone’s finances, then you will likely be disappointed with what you find. While the data and information you can compile on an individual is impressive, BeenVerfiied is still pulling records from public sources.
