TASERS, TASER Guns, and Stun
Guns
What is a TASER Gun?
A
TASER gun is basically an electroshock gun that is produced by a
company called TASER international. The name TASER is actually an
acronym that stands for “Thomas A. Swift’s Electric Rifle.” It was
originally designed in 1969 by an inventor named Jack Cover who named
the gun after the adventure character Tom Swift.
How do TASER Guns and Stun Guns Work?
TASER guns fire small dart-like electrodes that are propelled by
small gas charges (such as compressed nitrogen). The electrodes have metal wires that attach back to
the taser gun. When the electrodes make contact with the target, the
TASER transmits powerful electrical pulses along the wires and into the
body of the target. The maximum range of TASER guns is about 30 feet. The
TASER guns use a shaped pulse / arc of electricity that disrupts a
person's nerve and muscle function without needing metal prongs on the
projectile to penetrate the skin. The "pulse" model TASER guns are
designed to bring down a subject even if they are wearing body armor.
Who Uses TASER Guns and Stun Guns?
TASER guns are used primarily by police departments in an effort to
reduce the number of lethal firearm-related deaths. Many police
departments report a decline in the number of police officer-involved
shootings as a result of using the police TASER guns. TASER guns
and stun guns are also used by private security guards as an alternative
to carrying a firearm. Private citizens also use taser guns and
stun guns as a method of personal protection.
Controversy over TASER Guns and Stun Guns
There is growing
controversy about the use, or abuse of TASER guns. While they are not technically
considered lethal weapons, many question the safety and humaneness of TASER
guns. Many people feel the use of taser guns is abused. A number of civil liberty groups would like to see tasers banned
completely. In fact, Amnesty International has documented over 150 deaths
related to the use of TASER guns. Recently, the U.S. National Institute
of Justice began a study into taser-related abuse deaths that occurred while a
subject was custody.
