Maps, MapQuest, and Mapping Information

What is a Map?

A map is a diagrammatic representation of the earth's surface, or a portion of it.  The science and art of map-making is called cartography.  There are many different types of maps, such as:

  • Geographic maps - Maps of the world, Country maps, such as a map of the United States, state maps, county maps, city maps

  • Road Maps - also known as driving maps, show interstates, highways, roads and streets

  • Topographic maps - that show the topography of an area

  • Star maps - that show the constellations of stars in the sky

  • Online maps - such as MapQuest or Google Maps

  • Historical maps

  • Census maps - show the population of an area

  • Google Maps - Google Maps provides directions, interactive maps, and satellite/aerial imagery of the United States. Google Maps Can also search by keyword such as type of business.
  • MapQuest - MapQuest helps you find directions for and explore towns and cities worldwide.  MapQuest displays addresses on the map, and allows you to view nearby businesses, get driving directions and maps
  • Yahoo Maps - Yahoo's map facility. Street maps and driving directions for US cities.

Clark University, Guy H. Burnham Map & Aerial Photography Library The Guy H. Burnham Map & Aerial Photograph Library is an active spatial data information center of global scope. The collection consists of 230,000 maps, 7,800 aerial photographs, 1500 CD-ROMs, as well as atlases, journals, globes, map reference materials, tourist information and monographs (primarily on the subjects of cartography, history of cartography, computerized cartography, map and imagery interpretation, remote sensing and GIS). Because of depository agreements with the United States Government Printing Office, the Map Library houses a full array of maps published by the Federal government. The library provides service to the faculty, students, and staff of Clark University, as well as the general public throughout New England.

University of Georgia Map Collection The Map Library is a research-level cartographic collection whose substantial holdings include maps, aerial photography and remote sensed imagery, atlases, digital spatial data, and reference materials. Its mission is to provide bibliographic, physical, and intellectual access to cartographic information consistent with the mission of the University of Georgia Libraries, with a particular emphasis on cartographic information related to the State of Georgia. As a regional resource center the Map Library serves the University's students, staff and faculty as well as state, regional, national and international researchers.
University of Georgia, Rare Map Collection at the Hargrett Library The Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia Libraries maintains a collection of more than 1,000 historic maps spanning nearly 500 years, from the sixteenth century through the early twentieth century. Although not limited to a single geographic subject, the collection heavily emphasizes Georgia as colony and state, along with its surrounding region.
University of Michigan Map Library The Map Library is the principal collection for cartographic materials at the University of Michigan, with an emphasis on both historic and modern mapping, including digital resources. Has the largest collection of printed maps in the state of Michigan, and one of the largest at an academic institution.

University of Pittsburgh: Hillman Library Map Collection The map collection contains a wide variety of maps. General maps include resources such as historical, thematic, and road maps, and maps published by the National Geographic Society and the Army Map Service/ Defense Mapping Agency.. Depository maps are maps received from the U.S. government through Federal Depository Library Program. These include forestry maps, census maps, CIA maps, and maps from various other government agencies.

USGS Digital Line Graph Data Browser University of Virginia Library - Geostat (the Geospatial and Statistical Data Center) houses UVa's maps, geospatial data, and social science datasets. One of the library's Electronic Centers, our lab has specialized software to analyze digital geographic and statistical data, and trained staff to help you find and access the data you need.
