Spam

What is Spam?

Spam is the use of electronic messaging systems (mainly email) to send unsolicited bulk messages to multiple people simultaneously.  While the most widely recognized form of spam is e-mail spam, the term is applied to similar abuses in other media such as:

  • Instant messaging spam
  • Newsgroup spam
  • Search engine spam
  • Spam in blogs
  • Wiki spam
  • Online classified ads spam
  • Mobile phone messaging spam
  • Internet forum spam
  • Junk fax transmissions
  • Social networking spam

E-mail spam today is usually sent via "zombie networks", which are networks of virus- or worm-infected personal computers in homes and offices around the planet.  Many modern worm viruses install a "backdoor" that allows spammers to access computers and use them for malicious purposes, such as to send spam messages. This complicates attempts to control the spread of spam, as in many cases the spam doesn't even originate from the spammer.

What is a Spammer?

A spammer is a person who sends spam. Usually, these are people who think that they are going to get rich on the Internet by flooding inboxes with spam email messages and hoping for a response. They often do get a response. However, the response is from outraged people who receive the spam and complain to the ISP of the spammer, which usually gets the spammers dial-in accounts, email addresses, and/or web pages removed. Instead of deleting your spam, become one of those who fight spam. Just try fighting one spam email message per week.

CAUCE NA is led by a combined Board with a cumulative century of experience in the field of Internet advocacy

Federal Communications CommissionMany consumers find unsolicited e-mail – also known as spam – annoying and time-consuming. In addition, unwanted messages sent to wireless phones and other wireless devices can be intrusive and costly. In 2003, Congress enacted the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing (CAN-SPAM) Act to curb spam. As required by the Act, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted rules that prohibit sending unwanted commercial e-mail messages to wireless devices without prior permission. This ban took effect in March 2005. In addition, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) adopted detailed rules that restrict sending unwanted commercial e-mail messages to computers.
