What is Child Protective Services?

Child Protective Services (CPS) is a governmental agency in many states that responds to reports of child abuse or neglect. Some states use other names, such as Department of Children & Family Services (DCFS).

Child Protective Services is also known by the name of "Department of Social Services" (DSS) or simply "Social Services."

Child Protective Services is usually a unit within a state's or county's Department of Social Services with the latter also including programs for assistance with Medicaid, Food Stamps, child support, public housing, Adult Protective Services, and foster care and adoptions.
