Gang
Investigation Books
A gang is a group
of people who, through the organization, formation, and
establishment of an assemblage, share a common identity.
In current usage, the word gang typically denotes a criminal
organization or a criminal affiliation. The word gang often
carries a negative connotation.
Private
investigators are sometimes hired to infiltrate gangs to
conduct covert investigations involving gangs.
example, a parent hires a private investigator to determine
if their child has become involved in gang activity.
In other situations, private investigators may have to
interview gang members to get information about a crime or a
subject. Having an understanding of gang life, how
gangs are med and structured will be helpful to private
detectives.
Following are books that
provide more information on gangs and gang investigations.
From
Publishers Weekly - Starred Review. This harrowing,
turbocharged account of undercover life is
reminiscent of Joseph D. Pistone's Donnie Brasco.
After military service in Vietnam, Queen began his
law Enforcement career, eventually spending 20 years
as an ATF special agent. In 1998, through contact
with a "confidential informant," he began to hang
with the Mongol Nation, a violent Southern
California motorcycle club ("a tight-knit collective
of crazies, unpredictable and unrepentant badasses")
with 20 chapters in several states and 350 members
both in and out of prison. Assuming the role of
bearded biker "Billy St. John," Queen entered into a
28-month undercover operation. To gather evidence of
homicide, weapons and narcotics violations, he
sometimes wore a wire, knowing that its discovery
could lead to his murder. Indeed, he was suspected
at first of being a cop and forced to prove himself
in more than a few dangerous situations. But after
months of hazing, he became a trusted member. Queen
steers clear of melodrama and captures both sides of
his double life; the sadistic characters and
criminal camaraderie are contrasted with his own
inner turmoil, as he thought of the Mongols as his
friends while the investigation escalated. The
strength and white-hot intensity of the writing make
this read like a movie, and Hollywood is certain to
take note. 16 pages of b&w photos not seen by PW.

"Monster" Kody, today known as Sanyika Sakur, spent
16 years as a "gangbanger" in South Central Los
Angeles. His account begins at age 11, when he was
inducted into the ranks of the Crips, and ends
(hundreds of bodies later) with Scott serving a
seven-year prison term for beating a crack dealer.
Throughout, he successfully conveys a sense of the
siege mentality that prevails every minute of every
day, due to the daily barrage of gang-on-gang
violence. Names of derivative Crip gangs (e.g.,
Rollin' Sixties, Hoovers, Grape Street Watts Crips)
and gang members (e.g., Li'l Hunchy, Tray Ball,
Huckabuck) flit across the pages in a confusing
manner, but Scott pushes the narrative ward with
scarcely a glance backward, and, ultimately, names
and incidents are not important. Unfortunately,
Scott was in prison during the violence that
followed last year's Rodney King incident and thus
sheds little light on the peace treaty forged
between the Bloods and Crips. Although unrepentant,
Scott today is dedicated to ending gang violence.

From
Publishers Weekly - As the preface of this admirable
but ultimately disappointing memoir states,
Rodriguez, an award-winning poet and publisher of
the small press Tia Chucha, decided to document his
youth as an East Los Angeles gang member in an
effort to steer his teenaged son, Ramiro, away from
the gang that he recently joined. A member of
various Latino gangs based in and around the South
San Gabriel Valley during the late 1960s, Rogriguez
participated in random acts of violence, and was
imprisoned on several occasions for the crimes he
committed. Unfortunately, he offers frustratingly
little detail behind the facts of his life and
activity in the gangs. Rodriquez presents colorful
characters and highly charged events, such as
shootings, Mexican funerals, rapes and arrests, but
his writing style renders much of that rich material
gettable. - Copyright 1993 Reed Business

From
Publishers Weekly - After being physically and
emotionally abused by his mother and her live-in
boyfriend, Colton Simpson moved in with his
grandmother. She took care of him and brought him to
church, but Simpson still became Li'l Cee. This was
his name among the Crips, and on the night he was
initiated into the gang-the same day that he hit a
home run in Little League-he shot two men at a gas
station. He was ten years old. In this often
enthralling and emotional memoir, Simpson takes
readers inside his life with the gang, from the time
he joined through his 16-month prison sentence and
to his leaving the Crips. Some passages are quite
graphic and can drag on a bit too long, and some of
Simpson's turns of phrase can seem a bit awkward or
overdramatic. (The tumbling dominoes of my life
events lose their velocity) But the world Simpson
evokes with Pearlman's help is fascinating, and his
narrative is clearly heartfelt. for those readers
willing to look, the book provides a window into an
often misunderstood way of life. - Copyright © Reed
